Credential assessment explained

A credential assessment shows how your foreign qualification compares with the local system, which helps employers, schools and the authorities understand the value of what you have already achieved.

Different names, different jobs

Canada uses an educational credential assessment from an organisation designated for immigration. France has ENIC-NARIC for diploma comparability. Germany has recognition procedures and the anabin database. Australia uses skills assessing authorities that depend on your occupation.

Qualification versus profession

An assessment of a diploma is not the same as permission to practise a regulated profession such as medicine, nursing or law. Regulated professions need the licence or registration of their own regulator.

Avoid the common delays

  • Confirm which body your pathway accepts before you pay.
  • Ask your school early for official transcripts: some are sent directly.
  • Check translation and certification rules.
  • Keep copies of everything you send.

Fees and times are set by each body and change, so read its page before you start.

Checklist

  • Confirm the accepted body for your pathway
  • Request official transcripts early
  • Check translation rules
